The Kosovo Institute of Public Health announced that the first case of the Mpox virus, or monkeypox, has been confirmed in Kosovo.

The statement states that upon returning from West Africa, on December 24, a 30-year-old man was hospitalized at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases of the University Clinical Center of Kosovo with fever, rash on the face and hands, and skin changes.

The patient is in stable health. The institute has traced all reported contacts of the infected person and his family members, who have been given recommendations for infection prevention and control measures, the statement says.

The institute urged caution, adding that people infected with monkeypox usually have mild or moderate symptoms, lasting two to four weeks.

Monkeypox is transmitted through close contact.

The virus is accompanied by flu-like symptoms, as well as purulent blisters all over the body.

The World Health Organization declared a global public health emergency in August.
