On Thursday, the Government of Kosovo approved at an electronic session the termination of the regime of placing stickers on license plates from Serbia.
“The removal of this regime is an act of good neighborly relations and comes after full recognition of the plates of the Republic of Kosovo by Serbia,” announced the Government of Kosovo.
The decision enters into force on the day of its publication in the Official Gazette.
Since January 1, the free movement of vehicles with Kosovo license plates “RKS” has been enabled on the territory of Serbia without covering the state plates with white stickers.
The decision, which was made on December 25 last year, is a relief for citizens of Kosovo who use the territory of Serbia as a transit route or even as a destination.
Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti said in December last year that the decision of the Government of Serbia to recognize Kosovo license plates came after more than a decade of non-implementation of the agreement on freedom of movement and after two years of using stickers on license plates.
The application of the “sticker regime” for license plates, according to the agreement reached in Brussels between Kosovo and Serbia, began on October 4, 2021. According to that agreement, at the crossings on both the Kosovo and Serbian sides, the country markings were covered with white stickers on the license plates. This ended the previous regime of issuing test plates, but also ended the then road blockade by local Serbs from the north of Kosovo.
According to the data of the Government of Kosovo, from November 1 to December 14 last year, 3,405 citizens changed their license plates to “RKS”, most of them in the municipalities of North Mitrovica and Leposavić, AA writes.
