In Warsaw, the capital of Poland, large protests by farmers are announced, while they are promised European funds.
Namely, as stated, the European Commission is ready to unfreeze 137 billion euros for Poland.
On the other hand, large protests by farmers who have been blocking border crossings with Ukraine for three weeks have been announced in Warsaw. It is emphasized that the dispute over the transportation of Ukrainian grain will be resolved by the end of March.
However, Polish farmers are promised money from European funds, which was frozen for a year and a half due to violations of the rule of law. The European Commission estimates that the government of Donald Tusk is taking the right steps to restore the independence of the judiciary and is therefore ready to give it 137 billion euros.
The Polish judiciary did not purge itself overnight of judges who, instead of making independent decisions, followed the dictates of the previous national-conservative government. The current government coalition simply lacks the votes for changes in the Constitutional Court.
However, the Polish government has presented an action plan for the restoration of the rule of law, which, among other things, foresees that the members of the Judicial Council, which is the body for appointing judges, will be chosen only by the judicial power, and no longer by the executive power.
“The judicial system must be independent. And if the government manages to convince both the European Commission and the Polish public that it is establishing that independence, it will succeed,” said political scientist Olgierd Annusewicz.
The European Commission is ready to unfreeze 137 billion euros, or 600 billion zlotys, of cohesion money and funds from the Recovery and Resilience Fund.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said with visible relief that the revolution that led to the victory of the current coalition is yielding results.
“Six hundred billion zlotys. That is really huge money, which we will spend well and with which we will relieve everything that is currently causing tension and anxiety,” said Tusk.
However, not all tensions have been resolved. Polish media reports that President Andrzej Duda will almost certainly veto the rule of law reform. Tusk has already said once that he is ready for early elections in case of decision-making paralysis.
The judiciary is one of the reforms. The first was summarized by the Government in the public media. The largest Polish fact-checking portal “DEMAGOG” analyzed the main reports of public television after the media articles and found biased reporting – only this time in favor of Tusk’s government, AA writes.
