LeBron James is on the path to setting a sports record. The legendary basketball player is one step away from scoring 50.000 points in the NBA, a statistic believed to be unreachable in basketball, or at least not anytime soon.
James scored 17 points last Sunday in the Los Angeles Lakers’ victory over the Los Angeles Clippers with a score of 108-102. Interestingly, he was only half a point away (he needed to score 18 instead of 17 points) from reaching 50.000 points in his career. He had the opportunity to achieve that yesterday (Tuesday) when the Lakers played at home against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Surpassed even the legendary Jordan
LeBron James is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in terms of points scored in the regular season – he has scored 41.837 points, surpassing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar two years ago at the age of 39. He is also the league’s all-time leader in playoff points with 8.162 points, surpassing Michael Jordan back in 2017.
James has achieved top accomplishments in his career – four NBA championships and four MVP awards, and if he scores 50.000 points, he will enter history as a result never before seen from a basketball player in this sport.
Consistency and longevity
And while LeBron has scored 49.999 points, he is followed in second place by Kareem Abdul-Jabbar with 44.149 points, while Kobe Bryant is third with 39.283 points.
As stated by the NBA on its official website, LeBron is playing one of his best seasons – averaging 29.3 points with 55.5 percent shooting and 44 percent from three-point range in 11 games, and that only in one month.
During February, LeBron also became the first player in NBA history to have more 40+ point games at the age of 40 or older. Michael Jordan is the only other basketball player, a 40-year-old with a 40+ point game, with a record performance of 43 points.
The key reasons for his rise in his basketball career are best summed up in two words: consistency and longevity – they have brought him the rare status of a player who breaks historical records and sets new standards in the strongest basketball league.
