Following the completion of the registration process in accordance with the Rulebook on Quality Systems for Food Products, four traditional Bosnian and Herzegovinian (BiH) products have been entered into the Register of Designations of Origin and Geographical Indications in BiH, maintained by the Food Safety Agency of BiH.
“Herzegovinian cupter,” “Semberian cabbage,” and “Fojnica potatoes” have been registered with a geographical indication, while “Repovac cheese” has been registered with a designation of origin. The decisions regarding the registration of these products were published in the “Official Gazette of BiH,” issue no. 58/24.
Herzegovinian cupter is a durable food product, a traditional Herzegovinian confectionery; Semberian cabbage is a biennial herbaceous plant from the Brassicaceae family, which develops a large bud formed by folded leaves; Fojnica potatoes refer to tubers of the potato plant (Solanum tuberosum L.), intended for human consumption, grown on agricultural land within the administrative borders of the Fojnica municipality; Repovac cheese is a white brined, full-fat cheese made from whole sheep’s milk or a mixture of sheep’s and cow’s milk, where the proportion of cow’s milk must not exceed 20%.
The Agency reminds the public that with these four products, a total of 12 products in BiH are currently registered with a designation of origin, geographical indication, or a label of guaranteed traditional specialty.
Food products registered with one of these labels fall into a higher price category on the market, and the registered labels add value and recognition to the geographical area they originate from.
The registered designation is protected from any direct or indirect commercial use for food products not covered by the registration, the Agency added, Forbes writes.
