In light of the worrying escalation of femicide cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Chairman of the SDP BiH Club Saša Magazinović will propose an amendment to the agenda of the session of the House of Representatives of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina (PSBiH) in order to discuss this topic and reach appropriate conclusions in the highest legislative body.
“It is absolutely clear that the main competence for stopping the increasingly frequent cases of femicide lies at lower levels of government, but we cannot say that it does not concern us. It certainly concerns us and there are things that can be done. There are also mechanisms that need to be activated. The intention is not to take away anyone’s competences or to wage a political fight over anything. The intention is to do what is possible to stop this unacceptable trend of murders of women in Bosnia and Herzegovina,” said Magazinović.
He added that no one disputes that this is an extremely complex problem that requires the involvement and cooperation of a large number of institutions, and that is precisely where he sees the role of state institutions. The very fact that representatives of institutions from different levels of government would exchange opinions on their practices and correct shortcomings would lead to the establishment of improved standards of conduct in cases of violence against women and the assessment of the risk of violence against women. “I am sure that together we can all provide a stronger institutional response and create a better system than the current one, which is obviously not yielding results. It is important and can save lives if we accept to help each other create more advanced preventive mechanisms, including faster police response, more efficient measures to protect victims of violence, better inter-institutional cooperation, and the necessary legal changes,” Magazinović emphasized.
He called on the representatives to support the inclusion of this item on the agenda and, at least during the discussion on this topic, as he stated, to leave politics and differences aside, and to jointly create measures that are realistically possible to implement in order to show their responsibility and motivate all other institutions in BiH to do their part to stop this terrible wave of murders of women, the statement said.
