Meron: The final Verdict of Radovan Karadzic to be pronounced at the end of 2019

The President of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (Mechanism or MICT), the Judge Theodor Meron, presented the most recent report on the progress achieved in the work of the Mechanism to the Security Council of United Nations.

Meron started his addressing by noting the work and achievements of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and its contribution to strengthening of the basic principle of the international humanitarian law and human rights law. Meron praised the legacy of the ICTY, and he also stated that he is honoured to act as guardian of that legacy together with his colleagues in Mechanism.

While talking about the work of Mechanism, Judge Meron stated that the Mechanism is in the period of increased judicial activity, with two important appeals procedures in the cases against Radovan Karadzic and Vojislav Seselj, a repeated trial in the case Stanisic and Simatovic and numerous other ad hoc judicial issues. Regarding this, he noted that the Appellate Chamber in the case Seselj was scheduled for December 13, 2017, and that the verdict on appeal in that case is scheduled for the first part of 2018. Moreover, the appeal in the case Karadzic is expected by the end of the second quarter of 2018, and the verdict in that case is expected in late 2019. The President also recalled that any possible appeals filed in the case of Ratko Mladic (if any) will be under the jurisdiction of the Mechanism.

At the end, Meron expressed his gratitude to members of the United Nations on their assistance to the Mechanism, and recalled that timely and effective fulfilment of the mandate of Mechanism depends on “the constant support that is provided by the Security Council, its members and the international community, and the commitment of all interested parties on preserving the priceless legacy of the MICT and the ICTY”.
