Eight watches belonging to Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher were sold at auction in Geneva on Tuesday for just under four million Swiss francs ($4.4 million/€4.1 million).

The German seven-time F1 world champion was a passionate watch collector until a serious skiing accident in December 2013, after which he has not been seen in public.

The two watches sold at the Christie’s auction were personalized gifts that Schumacher received from then-Ferrari team boss Jean Todt as a Christmas present.

F.P. Journe Vagabondage watch with a dial commemorating Schumacher’s seven F1 world championships was sold for $1.6 million.

But the highest price – $2.7 million – was achieved by a vintage Patek Philippe pink gold watch.

“These results demonstrate the passion of international collectors for exceptional watches,” commented Remi Zulemin, the auction house’s watch expert. “We saw strong global participation, with a focus on the America,” he added.
