Milanovic: The Ustasha Salute has no Place in Today’s Croatia

Ustasha greetings, symbols and songs that undoubtedly celebrate the regime of the so-called NDH, and what could be seen and heard last night in Imotski, before and during a concert – have no place and must not have a place in today’s democratic Republic of Croatia, President of the Republic of Croatia Zoran Milanović said on Wednesday.

“They must not get the right of the public without sanctions, especially they must not remain without the reaction of the state institutions that are responsible for public order and peace, for compliance with the law,” wrote Milanović on Facebook.

He was referring to yesterday’s concert in Imotski where Mate Bulić, Dražen Zečić and Marko Perković Thompson performed. Before the concert, the Ustasha song ‘Evo zora, evo dana’ was sung on the main square, some of the gathered wore HOS t-shirts, torches and flags with the first white field, which have as their symbol ‘Za dom spremni’, were present.

“Thanks to the Government of Andrej Plenković, the Ustasha salute has acquired double connotations, and in fact the door is thus open to all those who want to misuse the memory of the Croatian defenders from the Homeland War. In the days of pride and glory, when we commemorate the magnificent victory in the Storm and the freedom they brought us “Croatian veterans, it is sad to see how individuals and groups recklessly and harmfully for Croatia once again throw into the shadows the heroes of the Homeland War whom we admire, and promote those sellers of Croatian land from the distant past of whom we must be ashamed,” said Milanović.

He also pointed out how the so-called NDH has nothing to do with the modern and sovereign Republic of Croatia.

“It is our duty to repeat the truth about the past to everyone who does not understand it, in the interest of Croatia’s future,” reads the end of the announcement by the President of the Republic, Zoran Milanović.
