She was only nine years old when she left her home and went into the unknown. Mirsada Alemic-Helac lost 40 members of her family in the Srebrenica genocide, Avaz news portal reports.
“They killed three uncles, three uncles’s sons, my grandfather, my grandmother … I have not yet found the remains of my grandmother Salkura, who stayed with her grandfather Mahmut in her house. They did not want to leave theirs and they were killed,” Mirsada Alemic-Helac, who lives in Sydney and who tries to come to Potocari every July 11, told Avaz last year.
“It’s really hard to take all this. After 24 years you are still waiting to find someone’s remains to be buried. I’m looking for bones of my family members. I hope that I will succeed in that,” says Mirsada, who also published a book in English about the suffering in Srebrenica called “Through the Eyes of an Innocent Child”.
