Members of the initiative ”Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform” yesterday on the square in front of the Sarajevo Cathedral distributed promotional materials with which they wanted to point out at the shortcomings and discrimination against women in the current Constitution of BiH.
They distributed document that they call “Platform of women’s priorities for constitutional changes”, in which are defined the priorities for which the initiative will advocate in the process of reforms of the Constitution.
In the document was noted that the Constitution of BiH, among other things, does not use gender-sensitive language and linguistically and grammatically does not show the existence of female gender.
Moreover, on behalf of the initiative, Vildana Dzekman said that the Constitution of BiH does not provide an explicit gender equality, which in practice means extreme inequality.
“That is why in the Constitution should be listed measures for prevention of discrimination and marginalization of women in very important spheres of life”, said Dzekman.
Members of the initiative are asking for an extension of the catalog of rights with provisions that are related to the unique health, social and family protection. They claim that, due to non-compliance of the law at all levels, the citizens of BiH do not have the right to equal health, social and family protection.
“This is another type of discrimination that is allowed by the Constitution of BiH,” said Dzekman, which was also noted in the document “Platform of women’s priorities for constitutional changes.”
This document requests better judicial and legal protection of human rights and freedoms.
Initiative ”Women Citizens for Constitutional Reform” is an informal group that gathers 36 civil society organizations, which are continuously working on understanding the concepts of sex and gender, peace, freedom and human rights.
