Miss Besieged Sarajevo: You’re talking about war again! Have your wounds healed?

Miss Besieged Sarajevo Inela Nogic posted a touching status on social media, which clearly shows that all the stories about the new war, which have been appearing lately due to the tense political situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), are out of the question.

”I survived the horrors of the last war, the horrors that left indelibly heavy scars and wounds that will need a lot of peace to heal.

You’re talking about war again! Have your wounds healed? It is not enough for you that there were hundreds of thousands of killed and evicted souls, so you would soak our beautiful country with even more blood. What was the purpose of that fight!? It is clear to me and even clearer to you.

After one war experience, I do not feel fear of any of the next ones, but what really worries me is that for some generations, the next one would be the first, ” Nogic wrote on social networks.

Apart from her status, she published a well-known photograph taken during the 1993 war, when she was crowned Miss Besieged Sarajevo. Then she and the other contestants put up a large banner on stage that read: “Don’t let them kill us“ (in Bosnian: Ne dajte im da nas ubiju).

Inela was only 17 at the time, and the world media wrote about her. Being chosen as a Miss while grenades are falling on your city is not something you can hear every day. As she herself stated in one of the interviews for “Dnevni Avaz”, she could understand that it did not seem normal to some at the time.

”But when a person finds himself in that situation and tries to continue living normally, and that turns out to be an integral part of life, it was more or less normal for us. It seemed strange to the rest of the world. I wish I hadn’t been there, in that war. And that is why it attracted so much attention, ” Nogic once said.
