Never-seen-before Photos from the U2 Concert in Sarajevo

On yesterday’s date, September 23rd, 26 years ago, the Irish band U2 held an anthology concert in Sarajevo, and on this occasion, never-before-seen photos from this event, taken by Massimo Sciacca, were shared on the Sniper Alley Facebook page.

“We have just received incredible and never-before-seen photos, great work by our friend Massimo Sciacca. Photos from the U2 concert held in Sarajevo exactly 26 years ago, on the 23rd of September. Where were you on September 23rd, 1997,” they wrote in the description of the post.

Sniper Alley brings 28 previously unpublished black and white photos that bring a different perspective to the concert that will remain etched in the memories of many Sarajevo residents, and are the work of Massimo Sciacca.

Irish rockers led by Paul David Hewson, the popular Bono, were strongly connected to Sarajevo during the war. On the “Zoo TV” tour in 1993, U2 organized live satellite link-ups during their concerts with people who lived in war-torn Sarajevo, during the siege of Sarajevo.

Bono promised then that one day he would come and play in Sarajevo. That day happened four years later as part of the “PopMart” tour and with the help of United Nations (UN) ambassadors and peacekeeping troops.

This concert will be remembered for the extravagant scene that was one of the trademarks of the tour, and the group played their usual repertoire in front of 45.000 people. Although the members of U2 proposed to hold a smaller charity concert in Sarajevo, a big concert took place, like any other within the “PopMart” tour.

About the mentioned concert, Bono also recorded the documentary “Kiss The Future”, which was the opening film of the last Sarajevo Film Festival (SFF), and it was the famous Irish musician who was a guest of the festival. U2 guitarist David Howell Evans, better known as The Edge, arrived in Sarajevo with Bono in August, Klix.ba reports.
