No major changes in Air Traffic over BiH after the Diversion of Flights to Eastern Europe

The diversion of air traffic over Ukraine and the declaration of part of the skies in Eastern Europe as a dangerous overflight zone should not significantly affect air traffic over Bosnia and Herzegovina, said Davorin Primorac, director of the Bosnia and Herzegovina Air Navigation Services Agency (BHANSA).

“Our analyzes have shown that the flights over Ukraine’s airspace, will not directly affect the distribution of traffic within the airspace of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary and Romania, which could lead to an increase in traffic in our country. If Hungary and Romania start introducing regulations, BHANSA is ready to possibly increase traffic within its declared capacity, where we are talking about 10 flights a day in the coming period, up to about 27 flights a day in the summer season, which is 1.5% of the total air traffic in BiH, “said Primorac.

He points out that the main flows of traffic over BiH go from Western Europe to Greece and Turkey, and make up over 80% of the traffic controlled by BHANSA. Therefore, he believes that the situation in Ukraine will not affect the distribution of traffic in the main traffic flows monitored from the center in Sarajevo.

Eurocontrol reacted immediately to the events in Ukraine yesterday and declared a significant area in Eastern Europe a dangerous flying zone. Primorac says they have been informed that many radar stations in Ukraine have been destroyed, all runways blocked, ATC staff evacuated, and that humanitarian corridors are not possible until further notice.

“In addition, we received information that in addition to the airspace of Ukraine and part of the Russian Federation, the airspace above Moldova was closed. Eurocontrol made traffic flow simulations, which envisage moving traffic south and north to bypass the airspace of Ukraine. It is too early to say what the actual routing will look like, because, as always, it depends on the preferences of the companies “, concludes Primorac.
