In order not to let the streets of Vienna or Pest to be ruined, the Austro- Hungarians decided to firstly try out “the horse railway”- as they called the trams back than – in Sarajevo.
Thus, in the summer of 1884 started laying of tram tracks and the digging of Sarajevo streets. On that occasion, Sarajevo was left without one of the most beautiful bridges – the stone bridge that was located on the Kosevo creek near the Ali Pasha’s mosque. But Sarajevo got the title of the first city in Balkans and Central Europe which had a tram, according to the portal historija.ba.
The first tram line in Sarajevo was 3.1 kilometers long, and started from the today’s Faculty of Economics, through the Ferhadija and the main street (today’s Tito’s street) over Marijin-Dvor and ended on a narrow railway station.
At that time, only one track was made and the tram came back on the same trails it went. It was stipulated that a horse must not drive more than two rounds, in order not to get exhausted. Johan Hanke was the first tram rider “tramvajdzija”.
The first tram officially started to work on the 1st of January 1885 at 10am.
