Last year, a total of 35,148 traffic accidents occurred on the roads in Bosnia and Herzegovina, of which 255 died and 10,944 were injured in 7,665, according to the data of the relevant ministries of the interior.

Last year, 135 people died in traffic accidents in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is 19 more than in 2022, 109 in the Republika Srpska, which is nine more, and 11 in the Brčko District of Bosnia and Herzegovina, i.e. five more.

In traffic accidents in Bosnia and Herzegovina last year, 1,695 people were seriously injured, and 9,249 were slightly injured, BIHAMK announced.

During the past year, 3,827 more accidents or 10.89 percent were registered compared to 2022, while the number of traffic accidents with dead or injured persons increased by 435 or 5.68 percent.

“Based on the data, it can be concluded that an average of slightly more than 96 traffic accidents occurred in the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina during 2023, of which 21 resulted in deaths or injuries,” the announcement states.

The largest number of traffic accidents was recorded on the streets in the settlement, followed by main, local, regional, and highways.

Of the total number of road accidents in Bosnia and Herzegovina last year, 27,488 resulted in material damage.

“A large number of traffic accidents is the result of non-compliance with traffic rules and regulations, as well as a low level of traffic culture and a large number of traffic participants,” stated BIHAMK.

The announcement adds that illegal speed and speed not adapted to road conditions are one of the most common causes of traffic accidents, followed by driving under the influence of alcohol and intoxicants.
