People destroyed one of the Largest Reservoirs of the Former Yugoslavia

Modrac Lake, which is located in the area of Lukavac, was once known as one of the most beautiful in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and was among the largest reservoirs in the former Yugoslavia. Unfortunately, the human hand managed to destroy it to a large extent, although its significance is still immeasurable today.

Modrac Lake in Lukavac is reputed to be one of the largest reservoirs in the former Yugoslavia. It was created in 1964 by the construction of a dam on the river Spreca in Modrac, near Lukavac. It experienced its tourist boom in the 1990s when it was one of the must-see tourist destinations in our country.

Sandy and beautifully decorated beaches with diving boards, sports fields, and children’s playgrounds were a special pleasure for numerous bathers who sought salvation from the summer heat precisely on this lake.

However, today the picture is significantly different. The beaches are neglected and mostly covered with garbage, only the structures of the diving boards remain, mostly corroded, the water is not suitable for swimming due to various contaminations, and the few visitors who stay in this area leave piles of garbage behind.

Ecologists continuously point out the importance of this locality, and they often carry out actions to clean the shores, but also the interior of the lake itself. They are persistent in their fight despite the fact that they cannot clean up the amount of waste that an unscrupulous hand can bring.

One of the cleaning actions was held last Saturday, and it was attended by members of the Center for Ecology and Energy Tuzla, the Eco Diving Group of Disabled People from Lukavac, and citizens and fishermen who consider Modrac a very important destination.

Bilal Saric from the Eco Diving Group of Disabled People from Lukavac says that they have been continuously cleaning the shore and bottom of Modrac Lake for nine years. The last action was carried out in October of last year, and four months later the situation is catastrophic.

“We also clean other lakes, but we definitely always find the largest amount of garbage at Modrac. One part is brought by the water and it is mostly plastic, however, but there is also a large amount of waste brought by unscrupulous citizens. Sometimes we also wonder if is there any point in cleaning, but our ecological struggle is always stronger and we strive to make the place more beautiful,” says Saric, Klix.ba reports.
