Police and Farmers Clash over Macron’s Visit to an Agricultural Fair

Farmers clash with police at the International Agricultural Fair (Salon International de l’Agriculture) in Paris on Saturday, as French President Emmanuel Macron tours the fair.

Tensions rose between farmers and the police, causing the Salon de l’Agriculture to open to the public later than planned.

Farmers began protests across France last month demanding better wages, simplified administration, no new pesticide bans, an end to tractor fuel hikes and better compensation after disasters.

They also challenged the increasing pressure of European Union regulations, including rules related to the Green Deal and the Common Agricultural Policy. They blocked highways in southwestern France, and some groups extended their protests to Paris.

Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced two separate sets of measures, including the withdrawal of a plan to increase taxes on agricultural fuels.

Those announcements did not satisfy the farmers, who criticize the Government for the slow implementation and lack of concrete measures, AA reports.
