The Prime Minister of North Macedonia, Dimitar Kovačevski, resigned on Thursday as the head of the government, as part of the preparations for the parliamentary elections that will be held on May 8 this year.

Before submitting his resignation, Kovačevski declared that he was doing what the law required.

He announced a meeting with the President of the Assembly, Talat Xhaferi, who should assume the position of President of the Technical Government of North Macedonia.

He pointed out that he is honored and proud of his work in the last two years during, as he said, a severe economic and energy crisis.

Kovačevski announced that he previously had an informal meeting with the ministers, whom he thanked for their “hard work”.

He expressed his belief that his country “will maintain its strategic direction, which is the Western orientation and strategic partnership with the USA”.

The President of the Assembly of North Macedonia, Talat Xhaferi, announced yesterday his resignation, as well as that of Prime Minister Kovačevski.

In accordance with the Przyń Agreement, which was reached in June 2015 to resolve the then political crisis in the country, the Government resigns and 100 days before the election day, a technical government is elected to conduct the elections.

The provisions of the Agreement are part of the Law on the Government, where, among other things, several ministerial positions are also provided for the opposition.

Political leaders in North Macedonia have agreed on the dates of presidential and parliamentary elections in December 2023.

It was agreed that the first round of presidential elections will be held on April 24, 2024, and the second round of presidential elections, which will be held together with the parliamentary elections, on May 8, 2024.

According to the agreement of the ruling coalition SDSM and DUI, in the last 100 days the prime minister should be from the ranks of DUI. This party decided to propose the current president of the Assembly, Talat Xhaferi, as the mandate holder of the technical government, who should resign from his current position for this reason.
