Chief Prosecutor of the Prosecutor’s Office of BiH, Gordana Tadić, together with the Head of the Special Department for War Crimes, held two separate meetings with the Associations which were attended by the IRMCT representative Mr. Zbigniew Wojdyla; one with President of the Association of Killed and Missing Soldiers of the BiH Army, Azra Penava and the other with the President of the Association of Victims and Witnesses of Genocide, Murat Tahirović, President and Vice-President of the Association of Mothers of the Srebrenica and Žepa Enclaves, Munira Subašić and Kada Hotić, and President of the Association of Women of Podrinje – Bratunac, Šuhra Sinanović.

The work on war crimes cases and amendments to the National War Crimes Strategy were discussed at the meeting as well as the process of search for the missing persons, regional cooperation and other current issues in the field of prosecuting war crimes cases.

The Prosecutor’s Office of BiH maintains regular contacts and cooperation with associations of victims of war crimes from all over BiH in order to prosecute war crimes cases as efficiently as possible

Over 100,000 people were killed during the country’s war, and of that number, some 40,000 were hidden in the mass graves across the country, and three-quarters of those missing have been found and identified.

Currently, over 7,000 people are still missing in BiH.

The BiH Law on Missing Persons, enacted in 2004, was the first such piece of legislation in a post-conflict country related to missing persons anywhere in the world. It codified the “right to the truth regarding the fate of missing relatives,” as well as a right to be informed about investigation efforts.

It also established the Missing Persons Institute (MPI) of BiH as an institution of the State and with a mandate to search for and identify missing persons across the entire territory of BiH.
