Massive Anti-Government Protests Sweep Belgrade in One of the Largest Rallies Yet

We are here because we are fighting for true values, transparency and responsibility of all those who manage our future, students of Belgrade University said on Saturday from a mass protest in the capital of Serbia.

All the central Belgrade streets are full of people, and the official part of the rally, which started formally in front of the Serbian Parliament, was moved to Trg Slavije, where the students addressed the citizens they invited to today’s protest.

The student pointed out that the demands of the student movement have not been met and that, if this continues, they will remain on the streets, in blockades and continue their struggle.

“Our concrete demands are the publication of the entire documentation on the reconstruction of the canopy at the railway station in Novi Sad, because we need to know accurate data in order to detect irregularities and prevent similar tragedies in the future,” the student emphasized.

The student movement does not have a leader, students decide on their actions at faculty and inter-faculty plenums, and they appear in public mostly by introducing themselves only by name.

“We are in a moment that shapes our future, because we all want changes, justice, we want to live in an orderly, just state where the law applies equally to everyone, where institutions do their work according to the law, without street pressure and where citizens do not have to be on the street for months to find out the truth and correct the injustice,” said today’s protest.

The students emphasized that they want to stay in their country and fight for an orderly society.

“We are woven from the disappointment of our parents and our unwavering desire to stay in our country and make it fairer for everyone,” is one of the messages from the protest in Belgrade.

The assembly proceeded without serious incidents, and the student-guards and plainclothes police isolated one woman who tried to steal the microphone from a student during her speech at Slavia.

Tens of thousands of people flocked to the central streets of Belgrade, participating in the anti-government protest “15 for 15.” to which the student movement invited all of Serbia, Hina writes.
