Protests due to the planned construction of the WTO Center in Sarajevo

Professors and students of the Faculty of Science (FSS) of the University of Sarajevo held a protest today in front of the faculty building, expressing their dissatisfaction and opposition to the Draft Regulatory Plan “Quadrant C”.

The plan envisages the construction of a WTO center in the immediate vicinity of the faculty, which, according to them, threatens the property and work of this higher education institution, Fena writes.

Dean of the FSS, Nusret Drešković, warned of the harmful consequences of this plan, emphasizing that the regulatory document envisages the transformation of the faculty’s land into a road that would serve private construction projects.

As he said, this is an attempt to usurp UNSA property, carried out by the initiators of the Regulatory Plan “Marijin Dvor-Quadrant C”.

“This plan practically erases the FSS, and turns our land into an access road for private plots. In the documents, the FSS is even called the Institute of Physics and Chemistry, which negates our status and tradition that has lasted for more than six decades,” said Drešković.

He added that the faculty management has submitted objections to the competent institutions and requested the withdrawal of the positive opinion of the Ministry of Transport from 2019, which, he claims, allowed private interests to be favored at the expense of the public good.

The President of the Student Parliament of the University of Sarajevo (SPUS), Imran Pašalić, provided support to the students and the faculty, stating that they are ready to take further steps to protect the interests of educational institutions.

“If the authorities continue to ignore the interests of the University, the students will take more decisive measures, inspired by the examples of colleagues from the region. We are at the disposal of the University of Sarajevo and the Faculty of Science,” said Pašalić.
