Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly suggested during a phone call with Donald Trump that a possible meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky be held in Moscow, but Zelensky declined, diplomatic sources said.

Putin suggested that a possible meeting with Zelensky, aimed at ending the war in Ukraine, be held in Moscow, according to two sources familiar with the phone call between Trump and Putin, AFP reported.

“Putin mentioned Moscow during their phone call on Monday,” one of the sources told AFP, adding that Zelensky replied “no.”

A diplomatic source close to the talks said European leaders told Trump that Putin’s proposal “doesn’t seem like a good idea.”

Meanwhile, NATO military leaders announced a meeting on Wednesday to discuss the next steps on Ukraine as Washington and European capitals work out details of what security guarantees for Kiev might look like.

US Air Force General Alexus Grynkewich, who also oversees all NATO operations in Europe, will brief defense chiefs on the results of a meeting in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin last week.
