[wzslider autoplay=”true”]Commemoration on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of the Srebrenica genocide and funeral for the victims of genocide were in the center of regional interest again this year, as well as the world’s media. Serbian media as usual avoided to call the crime with its real name, genocide, while the Croatian media emphasized that this is the greatest crime on the European region since the World War II.
Serbian b92 wrote that in BiH was marked “21 years since the forces of the Army of Republika Srpska entered Srebrenica on the 11th of July 1995 and then committed a war crime, killing almost 8,000 people.”
Serbian Blic stated that the 21st anniversary of the killing of Bosniaks in Srebrenica was marked in the sign of deteriorated Serbian-Bosnian relations, and the reason for it, as they emphasized, is the statement of the Mayor of Srebrenica Camil Durakovic that the organizing committee of the commemoration made the decision that the leadership of Serbia is not welcome on the 11th of July in Potocari.
“This is the first commemoration in Potocari since the Hague Tribunal sentenced the former president of Republika Srpska and supreme commander of its armed forces Radovan Karadzic to 40 years in prison. Karadzic was found guilty of genocide in Srebrenica and crimes committed against Muslims and Croats during the war in BiH,” wrote Blic.
When it comes to the world media, British BBC reported in its radio reports on the anniversary of the genocide in Srebrenica and stated that the anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre is calling for a better understanding of different cultures.
British Dailymail recalled that this is the worst crime in Europe after the Holocaust, and quoted Fatima Duric who lost her husband back in 1995. This medium also reminded that Srebrenica was declared as the safe zone of the UN at the time of the massacre.
American Washingtonpost published the identical text and stated that genocide victims were buried in mass graves which perpetrators dug up soon after the war and moved on different locations in order to cover the crime.
Neweurope wrote that forces of Bosnian Serbs led by General Ratko Mladic carried out mass killings of Bosnian Muslim men and teenage boys in the Srebrenica enclave in July 1995 and forcibly expelled 20,000 civilians from this area.
“The genocide that was carried out despite the protection of the UN attracted sharp criticism on this international organization,” wrote Neweurope.
