An exhibition of replicas of reliefs from stećak tombstones entitled “Stories in Stone” opened at the Franciscan Museum and Gallery in Gorica – Livno on Thursday.
The exhibition is dedicated to medieval stone monuments that have been a witness to the life, beliefs and identity of these areas for centuries.
The exhibition was organized by the Association of Art Historians of Herzegovina, in cooperation with the Gabrijela Jurkić High School of Fine Arts in Mostar and the Franciscan Museum and Gallery in Gorica – Livno.
At the opening, the audience was greeted by the director of the Museum, Dražena Džeko, while the authors Edita Vučić and Tatjana Mićević-Đurić spoke about the exhibition itself, while the musical part of the program was performed by students of the “Franjo S. Vilhar” Elementary Music School in Livno.
The exhibition includes six replicas of reliefs from stećak tombstones that depict the most complex and representative artistic compositions from the necropolises of Herzegovina. Interestingly, the replicas were made using modern CNC technology, which enabled a precise interpretation of the original motifs in a new exhibition context.
“Stećci, created between the 14th and 16th centuries, are recognizable by their diverse shapes and rich decoration. Motifs such as animal depictions, hunting scenes, round dances and tournaments reveal a world of symbolism in which life and death, everyday life and spirituality are intertwined,” said museum advisor Marija Marić Baković, emphasizing that this is an opportunity for a renewed dialogue with heritage.
During the exhibition, thematic workshops for elementary and secondary school students will be organized in the Museum premises with the aim of bringing the historical meaning of stećci closer to younger generations.
The exhibition “Stories in Stone” will be open to visitors until March 30, 2026, Fena news agency writes.
