In recent months, the residents of Gacko and surrounding towns have been fighting to solve the problem of filters on the chimneys of the Mine and the Gacko thermal power plant. As the locals say, life in this small municipality in eastern Herzegovina has become impossible. The meeting with the director of this company, held this morning, did not change anything.

More and more locals are dying and falling ill from malignant diseases in Gacko, where protests are being held these days due to the pollution caused by the Mine and the Gacko thermal power plant, according to residents of this small municipality. As they told us, they have been suffering a lot of pollution from this company for years, which is why they decided to put an end to the years-long bad business of the company’s management.

“If the factory that produces the electrofilters that we need for the operation of the Gacko mine were to start making them now, it would not make them in a year. The problem cannot be solved in a day, a month, it seems that years are at stake,” points out Siniša Malošević, president of the Nadinići Local Community.

Director of Mines and Thermal Power Plant Gacko Maksim Skoko did not answer on questions.

Representatives of the Nadanići Local Community held a meeting with the director of the company this morning, but without a solution. We also contacted the director of the company in Gacko, but we were unable to get any comment.

“If we see the smoke and ash going as it has been going for the last hundred days, we will immediately start a protest, that was the only item on the agenda of the meeting from our side,” said Malosevic.

Malosevic points out that at the meeting the director said that the problem is the poor quality of the coal, which is why a quick solution cannot be offered to the problem. However, they say they will not tolerate this way of working at the Gacko Mine and Thermal Power Plant and are looking for urgent solutions.
