Rising Water Levels Triggered by Heavy Rainfall Across BiH

Due to new precipitation and current water levels, water levels are expected to rise in most of the Sava River Basin in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in the Spreča, Usora, Sana, Sanica, Vrbas and Bosna river basins.

Given the current air temperatures, in addition to precipitation, additional runoff caused by snowmelt from the mountainous parts of the basin is expected, which may complicate the forecast hydrological situation.

Given the expected precipitation amounts in certain parts of the basins, the activation of torrential streams is possible.

An extraordinary hydrological situation is forecast for the next three days due to increased water levels, possible local water spills and flooding, especially in the areas of: the upper and middle parts of the Sana and Sanica basins, the upper part of the Vrbas basin, the upper and lower parts of the Bosna basin, and the Gostović, Usora and Spreča river basins (upstream of the Modrac reservoir).

The notification on the forecast of the emergency hydrological state refers to the Una-Sana, Central Bosnia, Zenica-Doboj, Tuzla and Sarajevo Cantons.

The Sava River Basin Agency suggests that the competent institutions monitor the situation on the ground and act in accordance with their authorities, and that services implementing measures and activities to protect and rescue people and material goods are recommended to exercise increased caution.

The competent civil protection services should warn the population that there is a danger of approaching the banks due to the possible increase in the depth and speed of water flow in the rivers, and to provide them with timely notification with instructions and guidelines, so that the population can take self-protection measures in time, with the aim of reducing damage from the harmful effects of floods.

The Agency notes that the notification is given based on forecasted precipitation and temperature data, so that a change in the weather forecast may also affect the forecasted hydrological state, Fena writes.
