On Monday, Russia warned the United Kingdom (UK) for the first time that if Ukraine uses UK weapons to attack Russian territory, Moscow could retaliate by targeting UK military objectives both inside Ukraine and beyond.
The UK Ambassador to Moscow, Nigel Casey, was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for an official discussion after Foreign Secretary David Cameron stated last week that Ukraine has the right to use UK weapons to attack Russia.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Cameron’s remarks acknowledge that the UK is now de facto part of the conflict and are contrary to earlier assurances that long-range weapons donated to Ukraine would not be used against Russia.
“Casey was warned that in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory with UK weapons, all UK military facilities and equipment in Ukraine and abroad could be targeted,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. The Ministry stated that Cameron’s statements are considered a serious escalation.
“The ambassador is urged to consider the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile actions by London and to immediately and unequivocally refute Cameron’s warmongering provocative statements,” the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.
During last week’s visit to Kyiv, Cameron stated that Ukraine has the right to use weapons provided by the UK to attack targets inside Russia and that it is up to Kyiv whether to do so or not, Klix.ba reports.
