A senior Russian general in charge of nuclear defense forces was killed in a bomb explosion hidden in an electric scooter in Moscow, Russia’s Investigative Committee said.

Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who is the head of Russia’s nuclear, biological and chemical defense troops, was killed outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, which begins about seven kilometers southeast of the Kremlin.

“Igor Kirillov, the head of the nuclear, chemical and biological defense forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, and his assistant were killed,” the Investigative Committee said.

Photos posted on Russian Telegram channels showed a shattered entrance to the building covered in rubble and two bodies lying in bloody snow.

Reuters footage from the scene showed a police cordon.

A criminal case has been opened.

The Russian Radioactive, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops, known as RKhBZ, are special forces that operate in conditions of radioactive, chemical and biological contamination.

Ukrainian prosecutors yesterday charged Kirillov in absentia with the alleged use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, the Security Service of Ukraine said, reports the Kyiv Independent.
