Sarajevo International Airport recorded a significant increase in the number of passengers in 2016.
In accordance with the expected growth in traffic, which requires a larger spatial capacity of all related services, on the airport are working on reorganization of the existing capacities in the past few months.
So far, arriving gate was expanded and Staff Counter for ITA (Customs) was opened in the public and the protected zone, in order to allow uninterrupted communication of passengers with customs officials.
Moreover, the re-configuration of the baggage conveyor was completed, which should result in faster and more efficient processing of passengers.
“We are also planning to build an exclusive VIP lounge, reconstruct the restaurant in Terminal A, and we would mention the reconstruction of the airport runway, in the total length of 2,600 meters, as one of the largest and most demanding projects. Also, prefabricated cold room will be built as well, and it will be used for processing of exports fresh meat and shipment of large dimensions.”
The construction of a new terminal was also announced, and from the Airport stated that the new Administration of Sarajevo International Airport will examine all aspects and possibilities for realization of this project in details.
“The construction of a new office building at a total length of 3,600 m2 is planned as well, and there will be transferred certain services and administration,” stated from the Airport and explained that it will be an object on three floors with access to the platform and with the parking lot, and a public competition for the main construction project was recently announced.
From the Sarajevo International Airport currently operates 12 airlines that are connecting Sarajevo to Zagreb, Vienna, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Munich, Istanbul, Dubai, Oslo, Cologne, Zurich, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Sharjah.
When it comes to new airlines, the negotiations with the airline Qatar Airways is in the final stage, and the establishment of direct line from Sarajevo to Doha is expected by the end of the year.
Increased traffic, expansion and construction of new facilities, apart from the opportunity for BH companies as contractors, should result in new jobs and creating more work places.
