A ceremony in Sarajevo today officially marked the successful completion of the “Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings of the Sarajevo Canton” project, which renovated 32 public buildings, including schools, kindergartens and health centers, achieving significant energy savings and improving conditions for users.

The project was financed by an EBRD loan of eight million euros, while the European Union provided a grant of two million euros. For the purpose of technical assistance for the implementation of the project, additional grants of one million euros were provided by the Austrian Government and the EBRD.

The Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton, Nihad Uk, stated that the renovations achieved better living conditions, more stable heating, better indoor air quality and lower energy costs.

“These changes are not abstract, they are felt every day in classrooms, kindergartens and health institutions. This is an approach that shows what public investments should look like – responsible, long-term and with clear effects,” said Uk.

EBRD Director in BiH Stela Melnik emphasized that the reconstruction of these facilities paid tribute to Sarajevo’s heritage and at the same time prepared the city for a new future.

Head of the Cooperation Sector at the European Union Delegation to BiH Magdalena Muller Uri emphasized that today’s event represents a significant milestone, especially when we consider the “green agenda”.

Deputy Ambassador of Austria Dominik Urak said that investing in energy efficiency means investing in people, sustainability and the future, and that his country proudly supports the successful implementation of this project.

It was stated that 32 facilities have been renovated to date, and a tender for works on the remaining four facilities that will be renovated as part of the project is expected to be announced soon.

The works included thermal insulation of external walls and roof surfaces, replacement of external joinery, replacement of heating elements, and installation of LED lighting.
