Schmidt is traveling to Brussels to explain the Changes to the BiH Election Law

In order to explain the changes to the Election Law, High Representative of the international community in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) Christian Schmidt will travel to Brussels on November 30th to the session of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament.

Member of the European Parliament Tineke Strik confirmed on Twitter that the High Representative in BiH will come to the committee session and called on him to withdraw his changes to the Election Law.

“Any changes in the electoral system of BiH should abolish discrimination, not further strengthen it,” Strik said.

Her colleague in the parliament, Klemen Groselj, expects Schmidt to clarify the connection between his decisions and Croatian diplomacy’s boast that changes to the electoral law are the result of their lobbying.

“Making decisions in favor of a neighboring country solely on the basis of ideological affiliation is inadmissible,” said the Slovenian member of the European Parliament.

A group of 25 parliamentarians from Germany, France and the Netherlands sent a letter to the Office of the High Representative (OHR) at the end of October, calling on Schmidt to withdraw his decisions related to changes to the Election Law in BiH.

“Such effective reforms should be achieved through a democratic process, not through the imposition of the OHR,” Strik said at the time.

The parliamentarians called on Schmidt to consider the way in which he uses the Bonn powers, stressing that the OSCE should give an opinion on the imposed changes to the Election Law of BiH.
