Serbia cannot be a part of NATO, Kosovo President says

The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, stated that Serbia cannot be a part of NATO, as long as it violates the values on which NATO was built.

Osmani, commenting on the statement of the US Ambassador to Serbia Christopher Hill, that Serbia is “currently much closer to NATO than Kosovo”, said that there is only one country that is further from NATO than Serbia, and that is Russia.

“There is only one country that is further from NATO than Serbia, and that is Putin’s Russia. A country like Serbia, which constantly violated the main values on which NATO stands, that is, protection from authoritarian powers, protection from countries that violate basic the rules of international law, such as Serbia, is not only far from NATO, but cannot even dream of being a part of NATO one day,” said Osmani.

She said that Serbia is a country that is still “sleeping on mass graves”.

“Anyone who considers Serbia to be close to NATO insults not only the member states but also the victims of Milosevic’s Serbia”, said Osmani and added that “Serbia is a country that committed an act of aggression against Kosovo a few months ago, and is constantly trying to destroy Bosnia and Herzegovina from the inside, and it does the same with Montenegro”.

At the same time, the American ambassador to Kosovo, Jeff Hovenier, said that Washington supports Kosovo’s path to NATO and expects that the official Pristina will one day be a member of the Alliance.

“I want to refute those who want to make comparisons of who is where,” Hovenier said. He reminded that four NATO countries still do not recognize Kosovo and that this challenge should be overcome in order to achieve membership, AA writes.
