The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, held an urgent meeting last night with some ministers of the Government of Serbia, after the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Aljbin Kurti, rejected the proposal of the USA, the EU and the Quinte countries and decided to ban the use of dinars in Kosovo.
The meeting discussed the next steps that Belgrade will take in this regard, Tanjug was told in the Presidency of Serbia.
The EU’s special envoy for dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo, Miroslav Lajčak, said yesterday in Pristina that the government of Kosovo will present information on the banning of dinars in Kosovo today.
The Central Bank of Kosovo announced on January 17 that the euro is the only currency allowed for making cash payments in Kosovo and that this measure will come into force on February 1, which would mean a ban on the use of dinars.
The embassies of the countries of the Quinte (France, Germany, Italy, Great Britain and the USA) in Pristina have called for the suspension of the application of the decree of the central bank in Pristina on the suspension of payment transactions and the abolition of the dinar as a means of payment in this province, according to which, as of February 1, the euro is the only means of payment for performing cash payment transactions in Kosovo.
“We are concerned about the impact of the decree, especially on schools and hospitals, for which no alternative process seems viable at the moment. The decree will also have a direct impact on the daily life of the vast majority of Serbs in Kosovo who receive payments or financial assistance from Serbia,” it said. in a joint statement after the meeting of Ambassador Quinta and the head of the EU Office in Pristina with Kurti, where one of the main topics was the regulation of the central bank in Pristina on payment transactions, Srna news agency reports.
