A gunman was killed and three police officers were wounded in a shooting near the Israeli embassy in neighboring Jordan, security sources said.

Police killed the attacker who opened fire on a police patrol in the Rabia neighborhood of Amman, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

Jordanian Communications Minister Mohamed Momani described the shooting as a terrorist attack on security forces. He added that an investigation into the attack was ongoing.

Police urged residents to stay indoors as they searched for other suspects.

The area is a hotbed of frequent anti-Israel demonstrations. Jordan hosted some of the largest peaceful rallies in the region during the Gaza war.

Many of Jordan’s 12 million citizens are of Palestinian origin. They or their parents were expelled or fled to Jordan during the fighting that followed the creation of Israel in 1948.
