Representative of the global leader in production of olives Agro Sevilla from Spain visited Mostar yesterday, where they met with relevant representatives and discussed possibilities of planting olives in the area of Herzegovina.
The Spanish delegation led by the President of the company Agro Sevilla Gabriel Redondo was hosted by the Mayor of Mostar Ljubo Bešlić, Minister of Agriculture, Water Management and Forestry of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton Donko Jović, and deans of two agricultural faculties in Mostar, Danijela Petrović and Ahmed Džumhur.
“The aim is primarily to stimulate young people to deal with olive growing, and in order to achieve that we have engaged a scientific community to which the Spanish scientists will convey their experiences and knowledge. Here we have a blend of science, interest and excellent organization and we want to convey that to our region. Our aim is not for the Spaniards who are ready to invest here to do so, our aim is primarily to convey their knowledge and experience here and hire our people,” Bešlić said.
Guests from Spain will visit the entire Herzegovina to see and test where the olives could be planted. According to the President of Agro Sevilla Gabriel Redondo, this region has the potential because it has climate, land and water.
During the meeting, Minister Jović said that the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton has suitable terrain, but that the canton is a pioneer in growing olives because they have been dealing with that only for the last 20 years.
When asked which the potential areas in Herzegovina for growing olives are, Minister Jović said that they are currently taking into consideration 1.500 hectares of potential arable land in the City of Mostar and municipalities of Čapljina, Stolac and Ravno. Jović highlighted that there is also potential in Neum and Čitluk.
