A magnitude 5.5 earthquake has struck the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, Mexican authorities and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The quake struck near the town of San Miguel Achiutla at a depth of 40 miles (64 kilometers), the USGS said.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum posted on the X network that no damage had been reported, while the governor of Oaxaca said in a message that emergency protocols had been activated.

A seismic alert was also sounded in Mexico City, causing residents to briefly take to the streets.
