Student from London klix.ba (1)Jonas Pelendi (20), a student from London, is one of five students who were chosen to travel to Srebrenica as a part of the BBC project of filming a documentary to mark the 20th anniversary of the genocide in this city.

Jonas is studying International Relations at the University of Queen Mary and is a member of the humanitarian association “Remembering Srebrenica”. He is one of five students who will participate in the BBC`s documentary which is to be shown in July this year.

The association Remembering Srebrenica recalls that, in July 1995 in Srebrenica, about 8.000 people were systematically killed, mostly men and boys who were executed by the members of the Army of the Republic of Srpska. Their bodies ended up in mass graves.

Pelendi has already had the opportunity to meet the members of the families of those killed in Srebrenica, and said it was an extremely emotional experience for him.

“I was born in 1995 and I’ve never had the opportunity to learn about the war in Bosnia before. It was a powerful experience. I spoke with the relatives of those killed and I could feel the emotional burden”, said this student, adding that it is a very sad and horrible fact that this dark episode in the history of mankind took place in a place only few hours of flight by plane from London.

“I met mothers who would give anything for just one more moment with their murdered husbands and sons whom they have watched as they were falling into the hands of their murderers”, said Jonas.
