bih-nato-1Atlantic initiative, with the help of Embassy of Kingdom of Norway to BiH, has organised on Friday a student NATO Model Conference, where students from all over BiH simulate the work of NATO.

Atlantic initiative, apart from dealing with safety, deals with NATO integrations as well. The aim is to enable young people to see how NATO functions.

Member of the team of Atlantic initiative, Sead Turčilo said that students from University of Mostar and Sarajevo simulated the analysis of improvement of aspiring NATO states of BiH, Serbia and Montenegro, while the other groups of students simulated the work of NATO member, and presented what aspiring states did in the past period and what are they chances of becoming a NATO member.

Turčilo said that students are not well informed, and think that NATO is a military alliance, and not political.

Deputy commander of NATO HQ Sarajevo Harald Hiorth said to journalists that this is a very important event because young people had the opportunity to directly influence the functioning of NATO.

He noted that one of special values of NATO is consensus decision making. Every country in NATO has only one voice in the decision making process.

‘These are young people, who’ll hopefully be citizens of one of future NATO states and because of that this is a very positive event, and this is the right way to educate young people in BiH about basic values of NATO’, said Hiorth.

As representatives of NATO member states, they discussed about the aspiring countries from the Western Balkans. This conference will also be held in Banja Luka on 31 May.
