Svrzo’s House Museum- A Hidden Beauty in the Old Town (gallery)

[wzslider autoplay=”true”]Except its pageantry, this museum of old Bosnian architecture portrays the former style of living in Sarajevo.

Svrzo’s House Museum was a residential complex that used to belong to one of the most respectable families in Sarajevo, the Glođo family. Later, through family connections it became property of the Svrzo family.

The house and its courtyard are entirely constructed in a traditional Bosnian style. They portray the way in which rich Muslim families used to live in Sarajevo in late 18th century and 19th century.

It is a rare example of a divided house- the male/public part (selamluk) and the female part (haremluk). Selamluk was intended for guests, while haremluk was intended for family gatherings and resting.

The biggest and the most beautiful room is musafirhana. This room is located on the ground floor and it was used for different types of celebrations including both family and holiday gatherings. It has a Pirot carpet, with walls decorated with Turkish and Austrian clocks and luxury Venetian mirrors, while its ceiling is decorated with a compelling sample of Ottoman chandeliers.

The bedroom is evidence that its household members used to sleep on the floors and it also contains an example of a traditional baby cradle. The walls are decorated with levhas- quotations from the Holy Quran.

Its details, such as handmade carpets, closets with carved Oriental motifs, copper dishes and luxury chandeliers testify the wealth of its former owners.

This beauty has a great significance for public events which are often held in its courtyard with a rose garden.
