BiH ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2010, but its implementation is slow and inconsistent in all parts of our country. Sarajevo is currently leading in the adaptation of the environment for the movement of persons with disabilities, but the pace is quite slow and these people are handling it by themselves.
The project of introducing sound signaling started more than 5 years ago, while the smaller tactile path was set last year at the Ferhadija. However, the blind and visually impaired people are having problems with movement in the capital of BiH because of the many pillars, steel cones and other obstacles that are placed in order for the vehicles to not be able to park on the sidewalks, while crossing the very busy streets also represents a problem.
“I got promises from the competent Ministry and the Municipality Centar that they will work to make things more accessible for the blind persons. According to the latest information, the tenders for tactile paving and audible signal are taking place,” said Fikret Zuko, the President of the Association of Blind and Visually Impaired Persons of CS.
Preparation of documents for the implementation of tactile paths in the area of the Municipality of Novi Grad started long time ago, and Mayor of Sarajevo Ivo Komsic, Minister of Transport of Canton Sarajevo Mujo Fiso and Mayor of the Municipality of Novi Grad, Semir Efendic, signed the Agreement on the implementation of this project in the total value of 55,000 BAM.
Minister of Transportation of CS, Mujo Fiso, stated that they will be persistent in this project and that the tactile paths and signaling devices should be installed in all municipalities in CS.
“Installation of guides will allow more independent moving to blind people as well as greater social inclusion,” said Zuko.
