Take a look how Skenderija looked like 23 years ago and how it looks now (gallery)

[wzslider autoplay=”true”]Beginning of May 1992 will forever remain deeply etched in memory for all the people of Sarajevo. Citizens did not know what exactly was going on, but by the intensity of the shooting and the force of the explosion, it was clear that this is not the usual gunfire and sporadic shelling of Sarajevo.

The first great battle for the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina took place on 2nd of May 1992. The burning trams in Skenderija and main post office on Obala. Shelling of Tito Street while hundreds of citizens were on the street when the attack began. Automatic gunfire and explosions of artillery shells echoed center of Sarajevo for hours.

The attempt of the special units of the Yugoslav army to occupy the Presidency of B&H culminated in Skenderija, where they were stopped by the Special Unit of the MUP and the Territorial Defense of Bosnia and Herzegovina made up of citizens of Sarajevo.
