zenica kruzni tok The construction of the Major Urban Highway (GGM) in Zenica has given a new dimension and the modernization of transport infrastructure to ‘’the city of steel’’.

As part of the Project for construction of Major Urban Highway, 14 roundabouts were built, which made traffic lights out of use. Although the roundabouts represented a problem at first, the drivers already got used to their use. Roundabouts and converting a part of the main road M-17, which runs through the city, will enable circular traffic in the city which will reduce traffic jams and improve traffic flow.

kruzni tokDirector of the Executive Agency for the construction of GGM, Mirsad Heleg, said that the construction of roundabouts improved all aspects of traffic in Zenica.

“We started project with the first five roundabouts, and after analysis we found out that roundabouts provide a better flow of traffic and present a special decoration in the city. Certainly there are other aspects that have been improved by building roundabouts within and outside the city’s main highway” said Heleg.

He added that using roundabouts, the safety of pedestrians as well as drivers was raised to a higher level.

“Although roundabouts have more conflict points, the practice so far showed decreased number of traffic accidents, and if they occur, the result is mostly minor damage. Roundabouts are safer for pedestrians because the speed of entering the roundabout is limited to 30 kilometers per hour, “added Heleg.

In the previous period, roundabouts were decorated with seasonal flowers, shrubs and bushes that decorated the city and have a longer duration as well.

crkvice zenicaSo far, 3,250 meters of the city’s main road is built in Zenica. The third phase of the project of building GGM from roundabouts at Express restaurant to the newly designed roundabout at the intersection Blatuša-Stacionar will be finalized soon. In the coming period, the construction of the outer section of the GGM with overall length of 4,480 meters is expected to begin.
