The Netherlands and Denmark could ask for additional conditions for opening Negotiations with BiH?

Some members of the European Union (EU), including the Netherlands and Denmark, are not satisfied with the European Commission’s recommendation for the opening of negotiations on the admission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to the EU, and may seek additional conditions for the official opening of negotiations, Politico reported.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced last week that she will make a recommendation for the opening of negotiations with BiH, which the European Council should vote on on March 21.

However, according to Politico, the Netherlands and Denmark are asking for an additional explanation as to why BiH received a positive report, assessing that the country must receive additional conditions if it wants to open negotiations.

“At the meeting on Wednesday, several EU countries asked for an explanation of the surprisingly positive report for Bosnia and Herzegovina – said four diplomats,” writes Politico.

They state that a potential compromise can be reached similar to Ukraine and Moldova, which received the green light from the European Council in December due to the political and security situation.

However, they believe that it is necessary to achieve additional conditions for later formal initiation of the negotiation process.

“We will not start real negotiations unless there are more reforms,” said one of the diplomats, Politico reported.
