The United States is expected to announce $1.25 billion in military aid to Ukraine, U.S. officials said Friday, as the Biden administration seeks to secure as much aid as possible for Kiev before leaving office on Jan. 20.

The large aid package includes a significant amount of ammunition, including for advanced surface-to-air missile systems and the HAVK air defense system. It will also provide Stinger missiles and 155- and 105-millimeter artillery shells, the officials said.

The officials, who said they expected the decision to be announced on Monday, spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details that have not yet been made public.

The new aid comes after Russia launched a series of attacks on Ukrainian power plants in recent days, although Ukraine said it had intercepted a significant number of missiles and drones.

Russian and Ukrainian forces are also still in a bitter battle over the Russian border region of Kursk, where Moscow has sent thousands of North Korean troops to help retake territory seized by Ukraine, Reuters reports.
