The US Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina made an announcement after the unveiling of the monument to the General of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Mehmed Alagić as part of the event “Days of Victory, Days of Pride – Luta Greda 2024” in Vlašić.
“As we have said before, the citizens of this country deserve better than honoring a person accused of war crimes by erecting a grandiose monument on Mount Vlašić. It is an insult to the victims and their families,” they said in response to a question from Hina news agency and other media from Croatia.
They believe that BiH authorities at all levels should promote mutual respect and an environment where every citizen will feel at home.
Alagić was the commander of the 3rd and then the 7th Corps of the RBiH Army during the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina, and after the war he retired and became the first post-war chief of Sanski Most.
He died on March 7, 2003 at the age of 56.
In 2001, the Hague Tribunal indicted General Alagić for war crimes for violating the laws and customs of war and grave violations of the Geneva Conventions.
