American and allied forces shot down 15 Yemeni Houthi rebel drones over the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, the US military command in the Middle East announced today.

That “major attack” by drones represents an “imminent threat to merchant ships, the US Navy and coalition ships in the region”, which is why they were shot down by US warships and aircraft and allies, Centcom said.

The Iran-backed Houthis are attacking cargo ships in the Red Sea with drones and missiles in retaliation for Israel’s offensive in Gaza. Yemeni rebels previously said they were doing it as a “sign of solidarity” with the Palestinians, Beta news agency writes.
