Thousands Mark Good Friday with Traditional Stations of the Cross on Hum Hill in Mostar

Catholic believers across Bosnia and Herzegovina marked Good Friday, commemorating the passion and death of Jesus Christ, with special devotion in Mostar, where the central event was held on Hum Hill.

Thousands of faithful from all Mostar parishes gathered for the traditional Stations of the Cross, walking in silence and prayer along the path leading to the Jubilee Cross. The devotion was led by the Bishop of Mostar-Duvno, Petar Palić.

A column of believers, stretching hundreds of meters, began its ascent from the foot of Hum in the afternoon. Despite the physical challenge and the spirit of Lenten penance, participants described the atmosphere as peaceful and deeply spiritual.

Many faithful highlighted the personal meaning of the event, emphasizing reflection, gratitude, and a sense of connection to Christ’s suffering. For some, it remains a lifelong tradition and one of the most powerful spiritual experiences of the year.

In his address, Bishop Palić underscored the importance of faith and perseverance, reminding believers of the message of hope that follows suffering.

He stressed that Good Friday carries a profound message — that through the cross comes redemption and the promise of resurrection — encouraging the faithful not to fear hardship, but to recognize it as part of a greater path of faith and salvation.

Following the devotions on Hum, the observance of Good Friday continues with evening rites in Mostar’s Cathedral and other churches, where believers will gather in silence and prayer, preparing for Easter and the celebration of the resurrection.
