Traces of Life 8,000 Years old found near Ljubuski City

An archeological founding is located in the village Radalj not far from Ljubuski. It’s a prehistoric cave, where traces of prehistoric settlements in the period of the early Neolithic and late Antic periods, around 6,000 B.C.E., discovered.

A major fan of archeology Vinko Herceg, in the cave Ljut, where archeological research was conducted this year and last year, noticed evidence of antic and middle ages. That was the reason he contacted archeologists Mirko Rasic, after which a research team was formed and digging started.

“We concluded that this could be significant. We had a good feeling with that. We started only with a digging campaign, and even confirmed the existence of something significant with a probe twice. At a depth of 1.4 meters, where found evidence of the antic, late antic, iron and bronze ages,” Herceg said.

During the process, they found hundreds of pieces of ceramic bowls, stone and bone weapons, and items of the late antic period.

“Among other things, a bronze chip from the late antic period, which is the 5th or 6th century C.E. Also, we found very important evidence from the early Neolithic period of a trumpet arrow with wings , which is the only of its kind on this coast of the Adriatic sea. This is important since it’s the only such evidence in the east coast of the Adriatic,” Marina Boban, an archeologist, said.

Of the various evidences, traces of the impresso culture of the early Neolithic period, which represents the first and oldest traces of human activities in Ljubusko, were found.

“The basic characteristics of the impresso culture is imprinting. Impresso in Italian means to impress something, which can be an impression of a nail, finger, shell, or any other sharp object. That’s why we’re satisfied with this research and why sometime in the future, we think the research will continue,” Boban added.
