Trump is Time Magazine’s Person of the Year

The United States (U.S.) magazine Time has named the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump as Person of the Year.

“If what follows is similar to what he promises, Trump will reshape this country and the world,” the magazine announced on its cover, alongside Trump’s picture.

The accompanying text states that Trump’s political resurgence is unparalleled in U.S. history, noting that “his first term ended in disgrace, and his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results culminated in the attack on the U.S. Capitol.”

“Most party officials shunned him when he announced his candidacy at the end of 2022 amidst multiple criminal investigations,” writes Time.

The magazine observes that just over a year later, Trump cleared the Republican field, triumphed in the party’s primaries, spent six weeks of the general election campaign in a New York courtroom, and survived an assassination attempt in July.

“Over the next four months, he defeated not one but two Democratic opponents, swept all seven swing states, and became the first Republican in 20 years to win the popular vote in a presidential election,” the article states.

Time notes that Trump has transformed U.S. politics, reshaped the Republican Party, and left the Democrats to reckon with what went wrong for them.
